If a bushy growth habit is desired, you can prune it early in the season to encourage it to branch and bush out instead of its normal, straight-up habit. It blooms all summer with whiteish-pink flowers. The foliage is evergreen, and the blooms can continue into fall/winter under certain conditions.

This great wetland flower is a larval host for the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus), queen butterfly (Danaus gilippus), and soldier butterfly (Danaus eresimus). In fact, research indicates it’s the preferred milkweed for monarchs, in part because it is the only evergreen milkweed throughout the entirety of Florida. It is also a good generalist pollinator plant, and attracts a variety of native wasps, bees, butterflies, and more. (1)

The stems can be used to create strong fibers used in textiles like fishing nets, cordage, and thread. (2)
