This great wetland flower is a larval host to the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus), queen butterfly (Danaus gilippus), and soldier butterfly, (Danaus eresimus). If a bushy growth habit is desired, you can prune it early in the season to encourage it to branch and bush instead of its normal straight-up habit. It blooms all summer with white flowers and goes dormant in the winter. The buds can be prepared like broccoli, however, it’s not very flavorful.
The stems can be used to create strong fibers used in textiles like fishing nets, cordage, and thread.
