This great wetland flower is a larval host to the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus), queen butterfly (Danaus gilippus), and soldier butterfly, (Danaus eresimus). If a most bushy growth habit is desired, you can prune it early in the season to encourage it to branch and bush instead of its normal straight-up habit. It blooms all summer with white flowers and goes dormant in the winter. It is not edible.
