This evergreen pine is often used as a native Christmas tree alternative and as a bonsai specimen because of its beautiful crown and often bent and twisted trunk. It produces pinecones whos seeds are eaten by birds, squirrels, and other small mammals.
The needles and/or bark gum is fragrant and can be used to scent soap, make scent bundles, etc. A compound infusion of needles in apple juice is drank as a kind of early sports drink – ‘for wind’ by the Cherokee people. The tree parts have stimulant, laxative, diuretic, pectoral, vermifuge, discutient, antiherpetic, detergent, baslasic, and vulnerary properties.
