Sparkleberry is the largest of the Vaccinium family, producing berries for both wildlife and humans. The berries have a mild tang and slight grit which can lend well to jams and pies. Becoming ripe in late summer to early fall, these berries can stay on the tree well into early winter, providing a valuable source of antioxidants.

The sparkleberry attracts a wide variety of pollinators and its fruits are eaten by wildlife. It is also the larval host for the striped hairstreak.
