Ohio Spiderwort blooms from the spring to the fall at various points, and blooms its blue or purple flowers in the mornings. It flowers best in the sun, and can spread quickly. It’s best planted as a border plant or groundcover and naturally occurs in open sites and woods.
The plant has many uses. The roots can be crushed to make a salve for wound care. The sap from crushed stems can be used to treat insect bites and sunburns. The leaves, stems, and flowers are edible: tender new stems and leaves can be parboiled and then sauteed like asparagus; flowers are a great salad garnish; the root can be made into tea (that can help relieve upset stomach andconstipation); the flowers can be used to make a soda.
