They like to grow in the shallow waters of streams, swamps, wet forests, and ditches. They are also very aromatic.

The Folidage and roots had many uses across multiple cultures and continents including: poultice for wounds, inflamed breasts, and general inflammations; treatment of skin problems such as spider bites; tea made of the whole plant can be used for fever, aching, rheumatism, and stomach ailments; as an emetic, antispasmodic, an astringent, a sedative, an emollient, and as a mild tranquilizer. It is also important in the ‘Green Corn Ceremony‘.
