This state threatened sunflower, blooms from late spring through fall and has bright yellow flowers. This species grows in clumps rather than spreading by rhizomes like the swamp sunflower. Their extensive root system does help stabilize the soil and promotes water retention, and assists in overall soil health. Primarily pollinated by native bees but also attracts a multitude of caterpillars, butterflies, and birds.
