This tall, summer blooming flower is pinkish white. It goes dormant in winter but returns from rootstock and can also self-seed. It has fragrant, vanilla scented blooms. It can be divided in fall or early spring if desired, and should be cut down to the ground in late winter/early spring to allow new growth access to sunlight. It will reach for the sun if it’s too shady. If you’d like to control the height, prune it once or twice prior to blooming.
Seeds feed birds and other small wildlife. It attracts many pollinators including bees, wasps, butterflies, and more. It is the larval host plant for the clymene moth (Haploa clymene) and pearl crescent (Phyciodes tharos). It is moderately deer resistant.
