This small deciduous tree has a yellow fall color and blooms in the spring with white flowers. It fruits in the fall with yellow fruit that are edible, but bitter. The seeds can be used like hops for brewing beer. In the landscape it is best used as a background plant or as a small specimen tree. It is pollinated by flies, most notably carrion flies. It is a larval host for the giant swallowtail butterfly.

It contains antibacterial and antifungal compounds like pteleatinium chloride; decoctions from the roots have been used as a stomach tonic and for oral/throat diseases.
