Blooms yellow in late summer through autumn. It is a host plant for the Dainty Sulphur. Golden Autumn is resistant to deer. It attracts birds, butterflies, and other pollinators. When they first start growing taller, cut them back to promote a bushier growth and prevent them falling over. As a cut flower, it lasts around 2-5 days in a vase.

This plant is poisonous to ruminants (i.e. cattle, sheep, deer). The flower heads can be dried when nearly mature and then used in a powdered form as a snuff to treat colds and headaches.
