This evergreen shrub is in the blueberry family, and as such, it gets spring blooms with long white flowers, which are reminiscent of blueberry flowers. It also gets catkins early in the season. It is a great plant to use for erosion control because of its habit of forming hedges or thickets. It takes well to pruning. In full sun locations, it needs more water. It attracts bees and butterflies. Some birds and small mammals consume the fruit, but the foliage is poisonous.
