Deciduous shrub that is known for the stout, sharp spines (thorns) found on the leaf stalks, stems, branches, and trunk. Birds (ex. chicadees, orioles, etc) and small mammals consume the fall fruit. The white spring blooms attract butterflies and bees; documented bee species include Colletes mandibularis, Hylaeus confluens, Augochlora pura, Coelioxys dolichos, C. texana, Megachile mendica, M. xylocopoides, and Epeolus zonatus (Deyrup et al. 2002).
