This evergreen tree blooms in the spring with small white flowers. It produces inedible, small orange fruits in fall that persist through winter, adding color to your landscape. Many birds and small mammals eat the fruit. It is a dioecious and needs a male and female tree to produce berries. It is hurricane wind-resistant. Multiple species of bees pollinate them.

The fruits can be useful in soap substitutes. Seminole children mash the fruits and blow through tubes/straws to make natural bubbles.
