This flower blooms from the summer through fall, with electric purple spikes composed of smaller flowers. They go winter dormant but are perennials that will grow back from their corm. They make a good cut flower like many Liatris species do.

These flowers attract many bees and butterflies and are a wonderful addition to wildflower butterfly gardens. Among the bees that have been documented visiting them are the leafcutting bees from the Megachildae family.
