A herbaceous to woody annual in most habitats; it occasionally goes dormant in winter and leaf back out in spring (this is typically along the coast). It also readily self-seeds each year, so the species will persist in your yard even if the original plant dies off. It is a fragrant addition to wildflower gardens, producing many short-lived blue flowers that can bloom periodically spring through fall.

It attracts various pollinators, and especially native bees. Documented bee species include the Miami Dade endemic species Caupolicana electa and Lassioglossum tarponense.
