This moist-loving wildflower blooms in May with purple-blue flowers. Butterflies will visit but are not effective pollinators. Primary pollinators are bumble bees and long-horned bees. They spread slowly through rhizomes. Do well along a pond margin, water garden, rain garden, or other low lying damp areas of the landscape. Resistant to browsing from deer.

Cherokee people use a compound medical salve for ulcers, and a root infusion for liver and urinary problems. (1) The “essence of violets” – used in perfumes – is extracted from the rhizomes of Iris.
