Beardtongue blooms mid summer with spikes of white and pink flowers. It attracts a wide range of wildlife including hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. Larval host plant for the Common Buckeye, Baltimore checkerspot butterfly, and noble sun moth.

Many tribes used it for colds, coughs, consumption, and whooping cough. The Cherokee used an infusion to stop cramps.
