This deciduous tree has an orange fall color. It produces small, inedible green to brown fruits that are eaten by birds, who also use the tree as a roosting area if they are a bird that wades. It is hurricane wind-resistant and is tolerant of root disturbance. Once a tree is mature, it can become resistant to rot. They can produce knees when conditions are wet enough. It is a larval host for baldcypress sphinx moth (Isoparce cupressi).
The tree is famous for providing timber, resins, and medicine. The leaves can relieve itching, and the bark is a diuretic.
