It does not spread vegetatively, and is slow to spread. Does best in wet woods, shallow swamps/ponds, rain gardens, septic areas, and slopes. Periodic removal of dead fronds needed. It changes from a vivid green to a golden-brown color in fall. The fronds provide shelter for small animals and birds. The plant is seldom damaged or browsed by deer. The rootstock is a source of osmunda fiber, a potting medium for orchids. (1)
