They can form small clusters in wet to moist soils, but seeds are wind-dispersed. It blooms from late summer to fall with yellow flowers. Deadhead to avoid self-seeding. It attracts bees and butterflies, including green metallic, sweat, leafcutter, bramble, and mining bees.
The Delaware tribes would use an infusion of roots to calm infants.
