AKA: Pickerel Rush

Pickerelweed is often used in wetland restoration and is loved by ducks because of its edible seeds and presence in marshes, swamps, and slow moving streams. It blooms sprint to fall with a short spike of purple flowers. The flowers make a decent dried specimen. It is winter-dormant and doesn’t have a very long lifespan, but it spreads vegetatively to form long-lasting patches.

The seeds can be eaten raw from the plant, boiled as cereal, or dried for future use; dried seeds can be ground and used to make flour for bread making. And infusion of the plant has been used by a few tribes to prevent pregnancy.
