Long, showy flowers, round foliage, and a deep taproot. Plant in the right location as this plant can’t be transplanted well. It is a legume, therefore a nitrogen fixer. Attracts bumblebees. Deer and rabbits browse the protein rich food. This plant is toxic to humans and livestock.

Larval host for wild indigo duskywing (Erynnis baptisiae) and Zarucco duskywing (Erynnis zarucco) butterflies.
