This blueberry is a wetland indicator plant; it can often be found in open flatwoods, dry uplands along rivers, along streams, in swamp forests, and at the bottom of cleared rivers that experience periodic flooding. They bloom Feb-April.

According to the North Carolina Extension website, “It can be easily confused with other rabbiteye blueberries, but it differs in the fact that it has smaller leaves with a length of only 1″ long and numerous slender round hairy stems.  To make harvesting the fruit easier, prune after the fruit ripens so plants do not become too tall the following year.”

Like all Vacciniums, it is attractive to pollinators like our native bee species. Fruits are edible for humans and wildlife, especially birds and small mammals.
