This long-lived deciduous shrub has a red fall color. It blooms in early spring with pretty white flowers. The fruits ripen in the fall and are technically edible, but generally considered not to taste good. They can be used to make jams and jellies that are heavy and sweet due to the abundance of pectin in the berries themselves. Many species of birds eat the fruit, which persist into the winter, and the flowers attract bees and butterflies.
