AKA: American Chinquapin, Dwarf Chestnut, Ashe’s Chinquapin, Trailing Chinquapin
This deciduous tree gets an orange fall color and inconspicuous spring blooms. The fruits with an edible nut ripen in the fall, which taste particularly good when dried. They can also be roasted and eaten similarly to chestnuts. Birds and squirrels also enjoy them. The nuts are covered in burrs and can be a problem if put too close to a home in a residential landscape. It does not need pruning besides the normal late winter removal of any dead or problematic branches. It is the larval host for orange-tipped oakworm moth (Anisota senatoria).
Cherokee people historically made a brown dye from the bark.
