This interesting deciduous tree has a yellow fall color and blooms in mid to late spring with yellow and green cup-shaped flowers that resemble tulips. It has interesting leaves that press well in collages, and its flowers make good honey and attract hummingbirds. It is a larval host for the eastern tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus).

It was traditionally used by various Indigenous peoples to make canoes reaching up to 30-40ft long; other uses for the wood include boards, blanks, bowls, spoons, door posts, barns, and more. Modern Catawba people use the roots as a vermifuge. In the 1829-1882 US Pharmacopoeia the bark was listed as a bitter tonic, antiperiodic, and diuretic.
