Blooms inconspicuously in spring. Offers yellow fall color. Attractive shaggy bark provides winter interest. Possible host plant for the red-spotted purple swallowtail (Limenitis arthemis) and eastern tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus). The hop-like seed pods are eaten by songbirds and small mammals. Hurricane wind resistant.
