This flashy shrub blooms with red and white lines of flowers in the late spring and has a fall leaf color. It is not edible and has a long taproot which can sometimes make transplanting it stressful for the plant. It does not require pruning. The fruit is consumed by birds and small wildlife, including gopher tortoises. They are pollinated by flies and bees and are also a larval host for the Zebra Swallowtail butterfly (Eurytides Marcellus) and pawpaw sphinx (Dolba hyloeus).
