AKA: Dwarf Pawpaw

A small, deciduous tree that is perfect for moist, shady areas and has a yellow fall color. Offers diminutive, interesting red/purple spring blooms. The fall fruit is edible for humans and wildlife. The fruit is the size and shape of a small cucumber and contains a yellow pulp with a similar consistency to custard, and tastes delicious. It has a long taproot that can make transplanting difficult. Larval host for zebra swallowtail (Eurytides marcellus) and pawpaw sphinx (Dolba hyloeus).

The fibrous inner bark can be stripped in early spring to make string for hanging fish (and similar tasks).
