This deciduous tree gets a yellow or red fall color and white blooms in early spring. Its fruits are inedible to humans and ripen in late summer to early fall. When the tree is young, it is important to prune it so that it only has one leader trunk. It is fast-growing and considered a softwood. It improves the water retention and aesthetics of wetland areas and is suitable for floodplains, swamps, drainage ponds, and swells. It is a larval host for eastern tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus), mourning cloak (Nymphalis antiopa) and viceroy (Limenitis archippus).
Miccosukee people use the stems to make pestles, spoons, and as firewood. Historically, they used the branches to make bows and arrows.
