This fast-growing evergreen prefers poor-draining soils. It is tolerant of deer, but does poorly in areas with too much shade. It grows to have a straight trunk, and provides winter coverage for wildlife. Its cones contain seeds that are eaten by birds and squirrels. It has a long history of being used as a fuel, and is known as a resinous pine.
