This evergreen tree has a classic Christmas Tree shape and makes a great native substitute. It produces cones at a young age, which are eaten by squirrels. The roots are sensitive to disturbance, so be careful when transplanting. It is best planted away from buildings, as it is more flammable than the average tree. It supports Imperial Moth (Eacles imperialis) larvae, which have one brood per season and appear from April to October in the south.

It is used for pulp wood and ship masts.
