Wood Sage blooms in late summer with a light lavender color. In moist areas, it forms large colonies and spreads aggressively. It attracts many pollinators, including bumblebees, honey bees, digger bees, cuckoo bees, megachilid bees, and flies. Insects it is a nectar plant for include butterflies and hummingbird moths.

Medicinally, tea made from the leaves was historically used to induce menstration, urination, and sweating.
