This winter-dormant perennial blooms summer into fall with blueish-purple flowers. It can form large patches by rhizomes and should be planted where this is not a problem. It is not edible, but it does make a nice cut flower for arrangements. It attracts many bees and butterflies, including the obscure skipper (Panoquina panoquinoides), salt marsh skipper (Panoquina panoquin), southern broken-dash (Wallengrenia otho), three-spotted skipper (Cymaenes tripunctus).

Synonymous with Eupatorium coelestinum.
