This small purple flower blooms from the late winter to early spring. It prefers well-drained moist conditions, and in ideal conditions it can colonize densely by underground rhizomes and runners. It attracts bees and butterflies, and is a larval host plant for the variegated fritillary, the beggar moth, great leopard moth, and large yellow underwing.
