This tall, evergreen tree is hurricane wind-resistant and tolerant of fire once established. It produces its cones in the spring, and they mature in the fall. They are wind-pollinated. They are a very useful tree for fox squirrels, woodpeckers, bald eagles, osprey, and many other species of raptors and eagles; often used for nesting.

The parts of the tree have stimulant, laxative, diuretic, pectoral, vermifuge, discutient, antiherpetic, detergent, baslasic, and vulnerary properties.
