This deciduous shrub has a yellow fall color. It blooms in the spring with long white flowers and early catkins. It is a nitrogen fixer and can colonize to form thickets. It is considered a specimen plant in moist or swampy areas, for its interesting bark and showy flowers. The foliage is browsed by deer.
It was used by the Cherokee as an analgesic, blood tonic, to treat coughs, skin, and kidney problems, as an emetic, and as a purgative.
